Australian Society of Anaesthetists

Formed in 1934, the Australian Society of Anaesthetists is a not-for-profit member funded organisation dedicated to supporting and connecting Australian anaesthetists. We work with and for our members to ensure the high standards of the profession. We primarily focus on the economic, workforce and professional interests of our members.

Our society is now one of the largest and leading medical associations in Australia, delivering a range of services of the highest quality to members. Membership consists of specialist anaesthetist physicians as well as registrar trainees and non-specialist medical practitioner anaesthetists.

Most anaesthesia in Australia is administered by medical specialists, who are highly trained doctors who undergo five or more years training in anaesthesia, pain management, resuscitation and the management of medical emergencies after graduating from medical school and completing internship and residency years.
